THE SCHOOL FOR WIVES

Setting: Derby. 1920s.

My first project in RWCMD in Cardiff was designing Neil Bartlett’'s adaptation of Moliere's The School For Wives. I imagined the story to resolve in 1920s. Why? 1920s was the first time women became interested in their freedom. It was Agnes that made me think of this time as I imagined her to be a form of Daisy Buchanan from Great Gatsby, all naive and dependant, however, as her story resloves she becomes more of Zelda Fitzgerald style of character interested more in the world and the meaning of being a woman.

In my designs I wanted to keep the historical and cultural context yet also wanted to develop the  characters through the costume narrative.
